Barton Creek began in 1974 as a country club, a golf course, and a conference center west of Austin. Today the Census counts it as its own place in Travis County, with 3,356 residents in 2020 and the 78735 ZIP code. The Fazio Foothills course at Omni Barton Creek Resort is known for steep elevation changes and rock-filled grottos. Many backyards here share that same limestone ground.
That ground drives how we design Barton Creek landscaping. Slopes call for retaining walls, terraces, and planned drainage before any patio or pool deck goes in. Rocky soil changes how we dig for footings, drip lines, and landscape lighting. A preserve of about 4,000 acres, set aside for the golden-cheeked warbler, runs along the community's western edge. Many lots look out on wild hills, and good lighting and planting should respect that view.
Rules shape the work too. Barton Creek is split into property owners associations with their own design review. In Barton Creek North, the master committee reviews pools, additions, and even landscape and lighting changes. The community also sits along Barton Creek, upstream of Barton Springs, so we favor low-impervious hardscape and drip irrigation.

What Barton Creek's Land and Rules Mean for Your Yard
Barton Creek is Hill Country golf land. The resort's Fazio Canyons course follows Short Springs Branch, a creek with a limestone bed. Fazio Foothills is laid out over steep hills and rock grottos. Homes share that terrain. On a sloped lot, rain runs fast and carries soil with it, so we plan the grade first. Stone retaining walls and terraces turn a steep drop into flat, usable space for a lawn, a fire pit, or a pool deck surround. Drainage lines move water to places where it can soak in instead of cutting ruts. Rock also slows digging, so we check it during the site visit and price it into the plan. Tall retaining walls can need a permit, and we handle that when the job calls for it.
Barton Creek is not one HOA. It is made up of several property owners associations, each with deed restrictions and design guidelines. Barton Creek North alone has a 655-member master POA that covers eleven gated communities. Its Master Architectural Control Committee reviews new construction, pools, additions, and even landscape and lighting changes. Approval usually takes 30 to 45 days, and the association notes that fees and deposits apply. Other Barton Creek associations have their own deed restrictions and review steps. We prepare the drawings, plant lists, and material details a committee needs, and we build the review time into your schedule.
Barton Creek flows east across the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone before its water comes back up at Barton Springs. In 1992, Austin voters passed the Save Our Springs (SOS) ordinance. It capped impervious cover at 15 percent of net site area in the recharge zone, 20 percent in the Barton Creek part of the contributing zone, and 25 percent elsewhere. Much of the later building in Barton Creek went ahead under a 1993 deal that let the developer follow only part of the SOS rules. So the limit on your lot depends on its plat, its deed restrictions, and which agency reviews the work. We confirm that before we design. Then we stretch your usable space with gravel paths, stepping stones, and open-joint stone.
Barton Creek homes do not all get water from the same place. Travis County WCID No. 19 serves The Ridge, The Woods I, and The Foothills. Next door, the Barton Creek West neighborhood gets its water from Barton Creek West Water Supply Corporation. That provider moved to Stage 3 limits on August 25, 2026, so its homes can water one day a week, from 6 to 10 a.m. Ask your own provider which stage it is in. Rules like these favor drip irrigation, smart zones, and native beds over wide lawns on spray heads. We set up each system for your provider's schedule, so new plants get what they need on the days you are allowed to water.
In 1994, The Nature Conservancy set up a preserve of about 4,000 acres next to the community. It runs along the community's western edge and protects the golden-cheeked warbler and the black-capped vireo. Where your lot has live oaks or red oaks, timing matters. The Texas A&M Forest Service says not to prune or wound oaks from February through June, when beetles spread oak wilt. It also says to paint any oak wound right away. We schedule oak trimming for the safe months and seal every cut. On lots that face wild land, we also lean toward native plants and aim landscape lights down, so the yard fits its setting.

How We Plan and Build a Barton Creek Yard
Sloped lots and POA review add steps that a flat city yard does not have. Here is how we fit them in, from the first call to the last walkthrough.

I've hired Nicholas and the Garden Goat team two times for projects and would happily recommend to others. Two years ago, we had irrigation and sod installed which went very smoothly and the sod and sprinklers have held up great over that time. The couple of small adjustments to the irrigation system that were needed have been no problem for Nicholas and team to take care of quickly. At the end of 2025 after getting a handful of quotes, we hired Garden Goat again for irrigation expansion in the back yard, a new path, and a new deck. After a bunch of back and forth on the design for the deck, I'm very happy with the outcome and can't recommend Jose and his carpentry work enough. The whole process was pretty easy and I was rarely if ever waiting on the Garden Goat team for anything.

Nicholas and his team were a pleasure to work with on our side and in our backyard. They removed a huge slab of exposed aggregate and installed lueders and pea gravel. We also had some drainage problems when it rained that they were able to address/fix the issues. We have had several heavy rains since the French drain was installed, and it works beautifully.

Check your own association's rules, since each section is different. We prepare the plans and details the committee asks for and set the build date around its answer.
Often, yes, but hard surfaces count against a limit. Austin's SOS ordinance caps impervious cover over the Barton Springs Zone at 15 to 25 percent of net site area. A 1993 deal let later Barton Creek building follow only part of the SOS rules. Your exact limit depends on your lot's plat, its deed restrictions, and the agency that reviews it. We check that first. Then we use gravel, open-joint stone, and planting beds to get more usable space from less paving.
Most of our design-build projects start at $20,000, and many land between $30,000 and $100,000. On sloped lots like many in Barton Creek, the biggest cost drivers are usually grade and rock. Retaining walls, drainage, and digging through limestone add work that a flat yard does not need. Outdoor kitchens with new gas or power lines also bring in licensed trades. You get an itemized quote, and the design fee is credited toward the build if you go ahead.
Plan oak trimming for July through January. The Texas A&M Forest Service advises against pruning or wounding oaks from February through June, when sap beetles carry the oak wilt fungus. It also says to paint every oak wound right away, in any season. We follow both rules on live oaks and red oaks. If a storm breaks a limb in spring, we clean up the break and seal the wound right away instead of waiting.
It depends on your provider, because more than one utility serves the Barton Creek area. For example, Travis County WCID No. 19 serves The Ridge, The Woods I, and The Foothills. Ask your provider which stage it is in and which days you can water. Tight limits are hard on new sod. So we lean on native plants, drip lines, and fall planting, which gives roots a mild season to settle in before summer.
Reach out two to three months before you want work to start. Design usually takes two to three weeks. After that, POA review can add a month or more, and Barton Creek North quotes 30 to 45 days. Construction then runs about four to eight weeks for most projects. Booking early lets us line up committee approval, any permits, and the best planting window in fall or early spring.
